There are specialized software applications that can recover deleted files, and that can come in handy if you accidentally delete a file you need or if some sort of accident occurs and you lose a file. It is not something you need if you want the deleted files to remain deleted. And this is where the MariusSoft-developed application Disk Scrubber comes in. It wipes your drives clean and truly erases deleted files.
To get started with Disk Scrubber you will first have to get a 2.3MB archive off the web and onto your computer. At such a lightweight size, the download will take but a moment to complete. Run the executable in the archive and a setup wizard will show up; it will take you through the steps of installing Disk Scrubber on your computer. You can install the application on anything from Windows 2000 up to Windows 7.
There’s nothing complicated about the interface. At the top there are buttons for the main functions, below that, your drives are listed, and lower still, info on a selected drive is presented. To get Disk Scrubber to do its job, all you have to do is select Single, Double or Triple Pass from the Start Scrub menu. Once you do so, Disk Scrubber will immediately go to work and start overwriting over a drive’s “free” space.
You see, when you delete a file, the space it occupied is deallocated but the file is still there; it will be gone only after it is overwritten, and that is why data recovery tools can recover deleted files. Disk Scrubber writes over the deleted data, thus ensuring that it can’t be recovered. The trial version of Disk Scrubber will not scrub removable storage devices; it will only scrub physical hard drives on the system and only using the single pass scrub method.
Switching focus to the visual, it must be said that you can change the way the application looks by picking one of several themes.
Get Disk Scrubber if you want to make sure that deleted data remains deleted.
Pros
Simple installation process; works with just about any Windows edition. Simple interface that can be modified by picking a theme. Scrub drives using the single, double, or triple pass scrub method.
Cons
Limited functionality in the trial version. Other applications offer a 7 and a 35 pass scrub method.
